ASTRA HAWK

Pedigree

Astra Hawk

Hawk was used many years ago on two females of ours and we are impressed with his children, also his work ethic.

He lives on a farm where there used to be cattle which he worked extreemly well, for the last four years there has been on stock on the farm except some horses which he keeps sorted out.

He is fearless with stock but also very natural and gentle. He greets everyone who visits his farm (and there are many as it is now a large soft fruit farm) with gentle suspicion, giving you the once over before ignoring your presence he is very loyal to his boss and his children.

The following photo's were taken the other day (he is now almost ten years old). He has never been trained to work sheep, but he took to it right away, enjoying the work with a biddable nature.

Astra Pridee

Well, what can I say about Pridee, she is the pride of my life. Not yet fully trained, because of lack of time.

She is very stong on sheep, but has a calm and settling effect on the sheep just like her mother Astra Pride (details)

Her previous litter by Aled Owens BOB include Astra Sas and Astra Joy my nursery dogs for this winter and Astra Mirk who is Aled's young hopeful.

I also have two other litter sisters Bonnie and Jet, in training now.

Rouge was a complete mistake (MINE), she is the product of a Father to Daughter and even worse a merle to a merle. I was so lucky that after four months (two months gestation and two months to testing age) that the whole litter were healthy and strong.

read more about Rouge

I am even luckier as Rouge has some fantastic qualities from her Father "Astra Mars" and her grandmother Mishka (full sister to Eryri Nan - our foundation female). Rouge is a natural on sheep, a superb temperament except for being a touch shy of some stranges and a real playful character.

MOSS 257186(Frank Noble)

Pedigree

Frank Nobles MOSS

Placed second in 2005 in the English Nationals, MOSS has represented England at the Internationals and was reserve for the English Team in 2009.

He is a multiple open trials winner in Northern England and earns his keep shepherding large numbers in Durham, North East England

I decided to use him when he beat me at my second open trial with my new dog Brock, he beat me by just one point and I was most impressed.

He is a genuine dog with a great temperament.

Tip tricolour border collie

Tip is by a great black and white dog who won many trials in Ireland until he was exported to Australia.

Tip herself went to Ireland as a pup (I did not breed her), where she was considered loaded with potential until an unfortunate accident with a quad bike dislocated her hip and unfortunately treatment did not rectify the problem.

She was not for sale prior to this accident but once healed she was offered to me and as she goes back to Astra Bet, I decided to take her on.

Even though on three legs Tip is very fast and lives to work. She has a great nature away from sheep being relaxed and easy to get on with. At sheep she is very strong both to hold and in confidence to move sheep.

DNA "CLEAR" for CEA

Both Tips parents have been hip scored with excellent hips.

WARNING!

A Border Collie Puppy bred by Astra Sheepdogs centre is bred first and foremost for the puppies Herding Ability which could make the puppy unsuitable as an ordinary Household Pet. Border Collies need to be exercised every day mentally and physically. Introducing, almost daily and on a continuous basis, tasks of Agility, obedience and especially tricks will keep them from becoming a walking disaster in your household (normal walkies is not sufficient for most Border Collies.

The Border Collie is not a breed which can be taken lightly into many households.

Therefore please think and do your research before applying to us for a puppy.

With the right type of training and environment numerous Astra Sheepdog Border Collie Puppies have been made into top class obedience, agility and flyball dogs not to mention their success on the Sheepdog Herding Trials field.

FAQ Border Collie Breeding & Rearing

Our Breeding Females
Our Breeding females are chosen for the temperaments, character, trainability, herding instincts. They must fit into our pack both in the house and Kennels, they all get their time as house pets and as flock dogs. These females could be for sale at any time as we believe they deserve to have individual attention as their final reward for working for us. These females will mostly be fully trained experienced flock dogs by the time they are five years old, at which time we will be starting to look for the best possible home for them.

Our Stud Males
Our Stud Males are chosen for the temperaments, character, trainability, herding instincts. They must fit into our pack both in the house and Kennels, they all get their time as house pets and as flock dogs.

Hip Dysplasia
Hip Dysplasia is becoming a recognized problem within some lines of Border Collies.

Our females and Males are screened for Hip Dysplasia as soon as possible.

All our puppies are guaranteed that they are sound to do the job which they are purchased for.

Our Stud Dogs are all hip scored or are from hip scored stock, or in some cases when using outside dogs we will generally only use those that are still working sound and agile at the age of nine years plus because it is not common within the ISDS members and handlers to examine and score hips.

CEA Collie Eye Anomaly
CEA a genetic defect that the puppy is born with, both parents must carry the gene as carriers or affected for CEA, All our breeding stock are tested clear of CEA or in the case of an extraordinary dog they maybe carriers but will be mated only to non carriers. For more information visit www.optigen.com

  • All dogs over the age of Two years will be certified physically free of CEA and PRA
    Back to top

PRA
PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) is, as it states, a progressive disease, in the Border Collie it is not considered to be hereditary but rather an environmental factor that has in the past caused the disease. However we are still eye testing our Breeding Stock at two years of age for PRA.

All dogs over the age of Two years will be certified physically free of CEA and PRA
Back to top

Epilepsy
This is a curse that appears to becoming more common in the Border Collie. However there is very little evidence available as yet to confirm whether it is hereditary or environmental.

We have not had reason to believe that any of our current or past bloodlines are affected with epilepsy.

There is currently research being done in the USA into the disease and if any genes can be isolated in the Border Collie. In the meantime we can only be honest and vigilant, reporting any possible epilepsy cases to the breeder and to the ISDS, including the registration details and veterinary notes on the affected dog, so more evidence and research can take place in order to hopefully one day find a cure or prevention.

OCD Collie Shoulder
Our only experience of OCD occurred in a grossly overweight puppy who was also not physically fit. We believe at present that OCD in not a problem with the Border Collie provided that the puppy and young dog is kept "mean and lean" in real terms the dog must not be overfed on high protein puppy foods and must be exercised well but not excessively. normal puppy play until the age of 12 mths is what we recommend, No Jumping, No sharp turns under lead. but most important do not over feed.

Temperament
Good temperament of all our dogs is extremely important but difficult for the average owner to understand when greeted by barking and what appear to be aggressive dogs. Our dogs live in a family pack and visitors are considered as outsiders, but stay with us a few days and you will truly be hooked into the wonderful outgoing friendly nature of even the shyest (lowest in pack order) of the females when they accept you into the pack.

Where are the puppies born?
Our females give birth to their puppies under observation in the house, usually in the sitting room for our comfort.

Where do they spend the first weeks?
The puppies spend their first few weeks in the house, (bathroom or kitchen)

Are your puppies kennel reared?
No, our puppies are reared until five weeks of age in the house where we can handle them as often as possible, and they are exposed to the noises of the hoover, washing machine, hairdryer, television, bathroom and kitchen activities, during the evenings they are invited into the sitting room to socialize with the cats and older dogs including our two Toy poodles. Only at five weeks do the pups go out into the puppy kennels.

Where do the puppies go at five weeks?
They go into the puppy Kennels which have a heated bed area and a sawdust run which opens up on the the main exercise yard so the puppies under supervision can join with other dogs playing and at other times interact safely through the bars. During the day in good weather they go into the outside puppy run which is overlooking the sheep paddocks and farm yard, they see cars, tractors etc going past. During all this time they are still handled several times a day. The regular photograph sessions give us a real insight into their individual characters.

Are the puppies handled by Children?
Yes, we consider this essential and have hi-jacked (really they love it) the next door neighbors children almost everyday, weather permitting to come and play with the pups, unfortunately they are growing up and we are just about to hi-jack some younger children.

How do you socialize your puppies?
Socialization starts the minute the pups are born, being regularly handled, even before the eyes and ears open, is essential to a well adjusted puppy. This handling continues until you take delivery of your new puppy. It is essential that the puppy continues to be introduced to new and extremely varied situations for the rest of their lives as learning never ceases with a dog.

Are the puppies eye tested?
Before the advent of the CEA gene test we eye tested every litter of pups, but now we know the status for CEA within our breeding dogs we feel there is little need to eye test them at six weeks of age, however we are always vigilant and will adapt again if this is required.

Can we book or place a deposit for a puppy now?
Yes, we will take a deposit for a puppy but only when the litter is born.

Please email us using the subject heading "puppy waiting list ". We will then place you on the "puppy waiting" mailing list.

You will be notified of any proposed mating's and subsequent definite pregnancies and finally the birth of the litter and the gender of the pups before they are placed on the web site for general viewing.
You will be given a link to view the pups photo's and you may choose your pup.

It is at this time a deposit will be required.

After persons on the waiting list have had a short time to respond the web page is opened to general viewing only if there are any puppies still available.

We have a waiting list for our puppies and I have found this to be the fairest way to take orders for pups.

What Guarantee's do you place on your puppies?
If you have purchased your pup for Sheep or Stock work:

  1. and you are having trouble with getting the pup to show instinct on stock or getting started with its herding training, we will give you six "free" half hour training sessions at the center.
  2. After No: 1, should the pup show absolutely no working instinct we will take him back and replace him.
  3. If at any age the pup becomes unfit to do the work for which it has been purchased due to a proven hereditary or genetic fault and subject to veterinary confirmation from our own chosen vet, we will replace it with another puppy.

If you have purchased your pup for Agility/canine sports/walking companion

  1. and/or it turns out to be a nuisance around stock (in that you cannot stop him or control him) we will guarantee to take him back, he will then be trained as a sheepdog and found a home suited to his calling,  This happens very occasionally but as these dogs are bred to work then it is essential that if the dog is not happy being just a pet then they must be returned to me.
  2. and/or it turns out to be a nuisance in the home or walking (and you have exhausted all training solutions) we will guarantee to take them back, he will then be trained as a sheepdog and found a home suited to his calling,  This happens very occasionally but as these dogs are bred to work then it is essential that if the dog is not happy being just a pet then they must be returned to me.
  3. If at any age the pup becomes unfit to do the work for which it has been purchased due to a proven hereditary or genetic fault and subject to veterinary confirmation from our own chosen vet, we will replace it with another puppy.

Are your puppies suitable as pets only?
As a general rule Border Collies bred to work stock, and our Border Collie Puppies are bred first and foremost for their Herding Ability which could make them unsuitable as ordinary Household Pets. Border Collies need to be exercised every day mentally and physically. Astra Sheepdog Puppies have made top class obedience, agility and fly ball dogs not to mention their success on the Sheepdog Trials field.

We take each application for a puppy into serious consideration.

Border Collies can and have changed peoples lives completely.

Can we show our puppy in the Breed/Show Ring?
Our Border Collies are not bred with the show ring in mind, they are modeled on the Original Working Border Collie that shepherds have developed over hundreds of generations into the most popular herding breed on the planet. A breed that can turn its paw at virtually anything you ask of it. Showing in the breed ring would drive most REAL Border Collies absolutely MAD.

Are the puppies registered with the UK Kennel Club?
Our puppies are registered with the ISDS The International Sheepdog Society who have allowed the UK Kennel club to transfer registration from the ISDS into the UK KC.

If you are exporting your puppy you will need to apply for an export pedigree from both the ISDS and the UK Kennel Club in order to transfer the registration into your countries registration body. However the ISDS has truly gone international and has accepted many counties in affiliation with them. Please ask the ISDS for more information on this.

Can we visit to choose our puppy and again to see it growing up?
We recommend that if possible you visit us at least once to prove to yourselves that we are who and what we say we are, we would also enjoy meeting you and checking you out too.

However if you are unable to visit us, we would love to have regular photo's and accounts of your pup as it grows and matures, the good and the bad. We want feedback to know that we have done our job right.

At what age are the puppies available to go to their new homes?
As we are licensed by Law as a dog breeder and the LAW states that we cannot allow the puppies to go to their new homes until they are eight weeks old please do not ask us to allow them to go younger as a negative may offend.

Are the puppies hearing tested?
We have not had reason to believe that any of our current or past bloodlines are possibly affected with deafness. Therefore, due to the current method of examining the puppies for deafness and the stress involved it is not something we do unless we should suspect a problem.

How often are the puppies de wormed?
Our pregnant females are wormed regularly throughout pregnancy and whilst they are rearing their pups. The puppies are de wormed between two and three weeks of age, this is repeated every two weeks until the puppies leave for their new homes. We do not use supermarket de-wormers only medication issued by a Vet.

What are the puppies fed on?
We only feed high quality 28 - 30% protein level feed specially formulated for pre-weaned and newly weaned puppies. We also add Ewes milk re placer until six weeks of age at which time the pups are fed on dry food.

When do the puppies require vaccinations?
Our mothers vaccinations are kept well up to date to ensure maximum cover to the puppy in uteri through to ten - twelve weeks of age when the pups should have started its vaccination program.

When you get your puppy at eight weeks we suggest talking to your own vet about when to start vaccinating and to perhaps cover the pup with a course of three vaccination by the time it is 14 weeks old. But your own vet may advise differently according to the current risk in your area.

The making of Rouge and Blonde (her litter sister)

Rouge was a complete mistake (MINE) and I cannot even blame anyone else.

We keep all bitches in season in what we call the kitchen yard, where they can be viewed constantly. There are three kennels within the kitchen yard situated in one room but there is a second room which is empty to provide shelter if the dogs require it, this room's door is almost always open, On this day my mother was cleaning Astra Mar's kennels and decided to put the bitches into their kennels and close their door so that Mars could not get to them, but he would have a change of scenery. I knew about this in the morning but had been out all day, returning at around four pm, walked into the kitchen yard to the kitchen, got a drink, walked back out, no sign of any dogs, including Mars and cursed that Mum had not let the bitches back out of their kennels.

So, I let them out, walked through the outside gate, turned around to close the gate and Mars was already tied with his daughter, The sky was blue and I even had that thought to pull them apart (impossible though). Mars must have been sleeping/hiding in the second room, but came out the instant he heard the dogs loose in the yard.

We now had a dilemma, one we had gone to great lengths for many years to avoid, (Mars proof fencing etc.)

What to do? There were two choices:

Rush to the vet for the injection to prevent pregnancy.

  • we have had past experience of using the injection
  • but still had two puppies born
  • On the bitches next season she had a massive pyometra and had to be de-sexed (neutered/Spayed) to save her life.
  • the reason we tried to abort the pregnancy was because the bitch was under twelve months old.
  • We believe that the use of hormones to prevent pregnancy or from coming into season is detrimental to the well being of the bitch.

Let nature take its course.

  • Feed the bitch well.
  • De worm her properly.
  • Be prepared to euthanase one or more of the litter if deformed.
  • Be prepared to either euthanase or hand feed/foster puppies if the young mother cannot cope.
  • Monitor and record progress of the litter from birth
  • Eye test and hearing test the litter when old enough
  • Find the appropriate homes with owners prepared to report both good and bad progress with the litter.
  • retain two pups ourselves for research purposes.

Once the decision was made:

  1. During the nine week pregnancy I had nightmares of deformed puppies with no eyes and ears, legs tails etc.
  2. A great sigh of relief when they were born normal.
  3. Another 10 to 14 days of hell until their eyes opened and showed that they had eyeballs.
  4. Another 5 days to see them respond to sound, but here my worries started full time, as I had instructed everyone going into the bathroom where they were situated to make stacks of noise and observe the puppies. Reports were that they just slept through it all.
  5. Six weeks of age and we started tests outdoors to monitor the hearing. Wow were we lucky, all had been bomb proofed because of our noise making in the bathroom but tests showed that the entire litter had good hearing.
  6. Six weeks old and they all pass the CEA and Coloboma eye tests
  7. Eight weeks old and they all have good heart sounds, no overshot or undershot jaws.
  8. We are real lucky and to top it all the whole litter are working sheep or doing agility extremely well.

I made a decision when confronted with this mating to take advantage of something that I would never knowingly do. Use the opportunity to initiate research into my own bloodlines. Only time will tell if a can of worms has been opened or a bed of roses cultivated. We are still in the process of developing a new, more interactive, web site specifically designed to gather information from the owners of "Astra" prefixed Border Collies, about the dogs we have bred.

Please continue to visit our site to see our progress which will unfortunately be slow but I guarantee, deliberate and methodical.

We wish to thank everyone for their help in supplying us with their experiences of a double merle mating and hope we shall continue to receive helpful advice and support in our personal research.

Blonde, a double merle This is Blonde, litter sister of Rouge.
